Indonesia Manufacturing Activity Shrinks for 5th Month
The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI increased to 48.2 in November 2019 from 47.7 in the prior month, still recording the second-lowest reading since the end of 2015. Output shrank for a fifth month running and at the second quickest pace since July 2017 and new orders dropped for the fourth straight month. In addition, employment contracted for the fifth consecutive month, though the rate of decline was the slowest since August. Lower sales contributed to a further accumulation in of inventories of finished goods, while falling backlogs of work prompted firms to reduce employment and scale back purchasing activity.On the price front, both input and output prices fell at fastest pace on record mainly due to lower cost of raw materials namely textiles and food. Finally, sentiment improved to a five-month high, boosted by planned market expansions, promotional activities and product quality.

The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI fell to 47.7 in October 2019 from 49.1 in the prior month, pointing to the steepest month of contraction in aciticty since November 2015. Output shrank for a fourth month running and at the quickest extent for almost four years and new orders fell for the third straight month and at the fastest pace since late 2015. In addition, export sales dropped further amid weakening global demand, while employment contracted amid renewed signs of spare capacity. Lower sales contributed to a further accumulation in stocks of finished goods and prompted firms to reduce purchasing activity. In terms of prices, input cost fell for the first time since April, with selling charge decreased for the second consecutive month. Finally, sentiment dipped to a six-month low.

Indonesia Factory Activity Shrinks for 3rd Month
The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI was at 49.1 in September, little-changed from 49.0 in the prior month. The latest reading pointed to the third straight month of contraction in the manufacturing sector, as output fell the most in 21 months; new orders shrank for the second month in a row and at the same rate as in August, which was the steepest since July 2017; and export sales dropped again. Also, employment declined for the third month running, and at the steepest rate since December 2017, while firms cut back their purchasing activity. In terms of prices, output charges fell for the first time in just over three years. Meanwhile, cost pressures remained muted, with input prices rising marginally. Finally, confidence remained buoyant, supported by promotional activities, planned market expansions, new product models and higher sales forecasts.

Indonesia Manufacturing PMI Falls to 25-Month Low
The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI dropped to 49.0 in August 2019 from 49.6 in the previous month. The latest reading pointed to the steepest contraction in the manufacturing sector since July 2017, as new orders declined for the first time in four months, and at the fastest rate in over two years, led by a marked decline in export sales. In response to lower demand, firms cut production and staff numbers were reduced at the fastest rate in 20 months. Also, buying activity was scaled back while stocks of finished goods increased amid reports of unsold products. In terms of prices, input costs rose at the weakest pace in the current four-month sequence of inflation. As a result, firms raised their output charges marginally. Lastly, sentiment remained buoyant, though dipped to a four-month low, linked to higher sales projections, new marketing and promotional activities, and planned capital investments.

The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI dropped to 49.6 in July 2019 from 50.6 in the previous month, signalling the first deterioration in the health of the sector in six months. Output fell for the first time since February and employment dropped for the first time since May last year. In addition, buying levels declined the most in three years, with firms tapping into existing stocks to meet production requirement and input inventories falling for the first time in six months. At the same time, demand conditions remained subdued, as indicated by a slight rise in new orders, though export sales grew at the fastest rate since October 2017. Consequently, the survey pointed to signs of spare capacity, with backlogs of work declining for the first time in three months. On the price front, input cost inflation was modest, while selling prices were broadly unchanged. Finally, sentiment remained buoyant, though the level of optimism dipped to a three-month low.

Indonesia Factory Activity Growth Eases in June
The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI dropped to 50.6 in June 2019 from a nine-month high of 51.6 in the previous month. Both output and new orders expanded at softer rates, job creation was the weakest seen for a year and purchasing activity slowed. On the price front, input and output cost inflation eased. Finally, business optimism remained elevated, with the Future Output Index staying among the highest levels seen for two-and-a-half-years, supported by planned business expansions, increased production capacity, promotional activity and greater client demand.
